This symposium will present a comprehensive cross-section of current fisheries research applications using acoustic tags, emphasizing recent new and novel approaches. The research projects described will include evaluation of fish migration paths, habitat use, high precision fish survival estimates, and measuring of energy budgets. Several of the presentations will be based on monitoring the fine scale three-dimensional movement of fish swimming paths, typically with sub-meter resolution. Presentations will be made by a wide variety of domestic and international presenters from several different organizations, whose research was conducted in many different environments (e.g., lakes, rivers, dams, aquaculture net pens, marine environments), with a number of different species (e.g., salmon, trout, eels, sharks, bass, sturgeon, shad, cod, sculpins). Due to recent advances in acoustic tag, receiver and software design, and the refinement of new applications, the use of acoustic tags for the types of research to be presented is growing rapidly. The value of this symposium to AFS members and participants will be that the audience will gain insights into the practicality of using acoustic tags directly from the hands-on users. In addition to presenting the methods and results for their particular studies, the presenters will discuss both the advantages and disadvantages of and the level of effort required for using current acoustic tag techniques for their novel research applications.
