Burbot Lota lota are one of only two species of freshwater fish that have a circumpolar distribution making them of international interest. In North America burbot are a species of special concern in Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, and Pennsylvania. They have been extirpated in the British Isles, in most of France, Belgium, in the Czech Republic and Slovenia. They are a species with many local names and held in high esteem in some waters and disregard in others. Although abundant in some waters they have not received the same degree of management popularity as have some species they share the same habitat with. As a result burbot are either not managed or mismanaged in many waters. A survey, by the senior organizer, of researchers and managers of western US states and Canadian Provinces, indicated their was a poor foundation of management understanding of burbot and little scientific information went into their management. This symposium, as the First International Burbot Symposium” has an objective of joining burbot managers and researchers in sharing information on status, general biology, management, ecology, and culture. The goal is to improve the management and understanding of burbot throughout their range with the intention of improving their status.
