Fluvial Geomorphology and Fish Habitat Symposium

Moderators: Michael D. Porter andTamara M. Massong
Emails: mporter@uc.usbr.gov and tmassong@uc.usbr.gov

Date: Wednesday, September 14, 2005
Time: 8:00 am to 5:40 pm
Location: Egan 7-8

Rivers are dynamic systems. How water and sediment shape channel morphology is an important step toward understanding riverine fish habitat. How these processes change from management actions provides clues for creating suitable habitat for fish under new equilibrium conditions. The symposium will provide a forum for geologists, biologists, and engineers to discuss formation of fish habitat in rivers. Much work is being done to manage and restore stream reaches around the country and the world. The concept for the symposium is presentation of papers examining various aspects of fluvial geomorphology and fish habitat. This combination of interdisciplinary papers would illustrate how river processes create habitat for fish. This symposium will build a foundation for understanding and managing fish habitat in river systems. The purpose of this symposium is to bring together state of the art researchers and practitioners in these fields to identify successful approaches and areas where further research is needed. The presentations examine river functions to understand and create fish habitat. The tools for managing riverine fish habitat include protecting watersheds with corridor buffers, determining the degree of development tolerable, and constructing habitat features in larger rivers. Understanding the interactions of channel form and fish habitat provide information on the effects of regulated flow and development on downstream habitat and aquatic communities.
