Time: 1:40 pm to 5:40 pm
Location: Egan 14

This symposium will reflect on how to improve both the writing and reviewing of manuscripts for fishery journals. We will update several topics based on changes in technology and advances in statistics, while reinforcing some of the basic principles that have not changed. Speakers will make recommendations about what authors should include and what reviewers should look for, especially given the increasing diversity of statistical methods that are being used. The symposium will also address the need for collaborative studies and related authorship issues. This symposium was developed from our experiences in the editorial arena, and in part from concerns raised during the process of the AFS Publication Overview Committee writing a strategic plan. Such concerns were expressed by some as justifying a need for three invited reviews in order to receive two useful ones. Our own experiences reinforce the view that too many reviews are not useful to editors and that many manuscripts are not prepared in a way that is conducive to constructive review.
