Socials

We have a wonderful lineup of socials that are included in the price of your registration:

Welcom to Anchorage Social - Sunday, September 11 at the Hilton Anchorage, 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm

Our host hotel, the Hilton Anchorage, is where our Annual Meeting begins. Bring your seafood appetite as the Hilton opens all of its ballrooms to welcome us with the finest from the sea. Crab, shrimp, salmon and halibut are on the menu, along with all the trimmings. Get reaquainted with old friends and colleagues, meet new friends, and begin to soak in our Alaskan hospitality.

Poster and Trade Show Social - Monday, September 12 at the Egan Convention Center, 5:30 pm to 9:00 pm

Monday evening's social will highlight our Trade Show vendors and Session 1 poster presenters located in the Egan Convention Center. Grab some good food, beer and wine and listen to Ray Troll and his "Ratfish Brothers" sing their rendition of "Lumpsuckers of Love". Several door prizes will also be given away, so don't leave early and miss your chance to win. And be sure to have Ray autograph an AFS 2005 meeting poster for you - at $10 they're a bargain and sure to be a collector's item! A hosted luncheon is planned for Session 2 poster presenters on Wednesday, September 14 from noon to 1:40pm.

Student Social - Tuesday, September 13 at the Fourth Avenue Theater, 8:00 pm to 11:00 pm

The student social is planned for Tuesday, in the historic Fourth Avenue Theater, an art deco-style landmark that first opened in Anchorage in 1947, and which survived the famous Good Friday Earthquake of 1964. Check out the floor-to-ceiling bronze murals inside the building. The evening is earmarked for students, mentors, prospective employers, and professors. Students will begin the night in a jobs fair atmosphere where potential employers will answer your questions and provide background on their respective institutions and companies. Polish your resume skills during short seminars and talk with professors about grad schools and possible thesis topics. Finally, finish the evening with plenty of food, drink, music, conversion, dancing, and fun.

Alaska Native Heritage Center Social - Wednesday, September 14 at the Alaska Native Heritage Center, 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm

Don't miss this social! Set on 26 acres of forested land on the eastern edge of Anchorage, the Alaska Native Heritage Center features village settings and cultural galleries from a few of the many distinct Native cultures found in Alaska, including Athabascan, Yup'ik, Cup'ik, Inupiaq, St. Lawrence Island Yupik, Aleut, Alutiiq, Eyak, Tlingit, Haida and Tsimishian. Upon arrival at the center, guests will be greeted by Alaska's First People in their traditional attire, and enjoy entertainment such as traditional Athabascan fiddling, Native dancing, and Native Olympic demonstrations. Martin Buser, a four-time Iditarod Dog Sled Race winner, will also attend. Visit with Martin, cuddle a puppy, and sit in a Iditarod dog sled! Food will classic Alaskan far, including grilled Copper River red salmon, reindeer stew, and plenty of soft drinks, and a local microbrew.

Farewell Social - Thursday, September 15 at the Hilton Anchorage

After a packed full week of seminars, papers, and excellent speakers, join us for a relaxed informal gathering in the Hilton ballrooms on Thursday evening. Use this time to reflect on the week and keep those interesting conversations going over a beer, some wine, soft drinks and light food fare. Since the 2005 meeting continues through the late afternoon on Thursday, you really can't pass up one last party!
