Special Information for Students Attending AFS 2005

Attention student members of the American Fisheries Society!

Looking for an adventure? Of course you are ! If you've never traveled to Alaska and have always wanted to-this is your perfect opportunity! Attend the Annual AFSMeeting in Anchorage , Alaska September 11-15, 2005 ! Alaska AFS Student Subunit Program Chair, Courtenay Peirce , assures you this is not an event to be passed up

Reduced Registration fees

Student members of the American Fisheries Society will receive four full days of fisheries, five nights of socials plus an eventful student activity calendar at the extremely reduced registration fee of just $95!

Accomodations and Transportation

Accommodations have been reserved at special rates at the Howard Johnson Inn and are limited, so please act soon! Some great youth hostels and airfare specials are listed on the meeting website.

Employment Opportunities

Students, why just spend money on this trip? Student employees will be needed in the meeting rooms to handle the computers and lighting equipment at a wage of $10 per hour Here is an excellent way to work a few hours so you can have some spending money or earn back that registration fee with just a day's work!

AFS Business Meeting 3:30-5:30 pm

Workshops, Employment & University Fair 5:45-8:00 pm

Student Social 8:00-11:00 pm

Eat, drink and be merry at the historic Theatre that survived an earthquake which registering 9.2 on the Richter scale! This is an excellent opportunity to not only relax while enjoying fine Alaskan sausage, seafood, music and a student raffle, but also an outstanding time for networking. You will be socializing with the future of North American fisheries professionals. The acquaintances made at this conference will likely develop into your future professional network as well as lifelong friends!

Aside from all of the meeting events, Anchorage has an extensive and easily accessible trail system and extraordinary hiking and camping within a few miles of the meeting.

Call for Employment and University Fair and Workshops

If you are a motivated professional and/or professor, and would like to host a workshop to assist students with various skill builders, please contact Courtenay Peirce at courtenay_afs@hotmail.com . Workshop skills can include but are not limited to, resume building, GRE and graduate school preparation, interview style and technique, etc.

Potential employers such as federal, state, tribal and private agencies are able to participate in a student employment fair. Here employers will have the chance to meet with the future of North America 's fisheries professionals and advertise any current or future available positions. Overviews of agency hiring policy and procedures should be included.

Professors of universities or other fisheries-affiliated schools: There will be an Employment and University Fair for all students on Tuesday, September 13. We are encouraging all universities and colleges with fisheries or biology programs to participate in this fair by bringing flyers or other materials and meet with potential new students in Anchorage ! Reservations can be made with Courtenay Peirce at courtenay_afs@hotmail.com and are due by August 1, 2005 .
