Kenai Fjords National Park Wildlife & Glacier Cruise and Train Tour
Sunday, Sept. 11
Depart Anchorage for a 4½-hour train ride to Seward. You'll be welcomed aboard the Alaska Railroad, America 's only full-service railroad, offering both freight and passenger service year round. The railroad's route, including branch lines and sidings, covers more than 500 miles. The line runs from tidewater at Seward to Anchorage , the state's largest city, and through the heart of Alaska to Fairbanks . Construction of the line began in 1915 and was completed in 1923. The railroad was built in sections by work gangs. Their construction camps grew into section stations where crews who maintained the line lived along with their families. Today roving work crews whose families live in towns that sprang up along the tracks perform most of the maintenance. In fact, nearly 70 percent of Alaska 's population lives along the railroad corridor. The Alaska Railroad hauls a diverse load from natural resources such as coal, gravel, logs and petroleum products, to groceries and heavy equipment. In addition, nearly 500,000 people ride the railroad every year.
Your train ride will travel south out of Girdwood along the breathtaking Turnagain Arm. The Turnagain Arm was named when Captain Cook's search up the arm for the Northwest Passage ended when he had to “turn again.” Watch for the bore tide, a huge wall of water rushing into or out of the arm during tide changes. The wave sometimes reaches 30 feet, the second highest tide in the world. Travel through Portage , which was devastated by the 1964 earthquake, the old town of Portage is all but gone. Dead trees stand in silent testimony to the power of the quake, which flooded the town and dropped the surrounding land 10 to 12 feet. The train tracks then turn into the mountains near Portage and begin to venture into some of Alaska 's most pristine wilderness area. You'll pass by Spencer Glacier; this magnificent wall of ice is 4,000 feet from the train. There are excellent photo opportunities here and moose are commonly seen through this area. The train winds its way through five tunnels as the tracks traverse the Placer River valley, which the movie “Runaway Train” with Jon Voight was filmed here in the early 1980's. View Bartlett Glacier, which is visible just 800 feet away from the tracks and Deadman Glacier rises above. Then within minutes the train goes over the Placid River Bridge , 106 feet above the river. Bears and beavers are frequently seen in this area. The summit of the pass is at Grandview , elevation 1,063 feet. Travel past the Kenai Lake , which is a good place to watch for Dall sheep on the mountainsides. Kenai Lake is over 16 miles long and 600 feet deep. The turquoise blue color is a result of sunlight striking suspended glacial silt in the water. The train will pass over Resurrection River , home to Alaska silver salmon, and arrives in Seward, the beginning of the railroad's main line. Located on the northern end of Resurrection Bay and tucked into the Kenai mountains, Seward is an ice free port, surrounded by incredible wilderness. Upon arrival in Seward, have a magnificent day cruising the spectacular fjords of Alaska . The cruise begins in Seward, gateway to Resurrection Bay and Kenai Fjords National Park . This combination wildlife and glacier cruise takes you through Resurrection Bay --to the very face of an active tidewater glacier where you'll spend time watching these glaciers “calve” giant splinters of blue ice into the ocean while enjoying lunch. You'll visit the Chiswell Islands , part of the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge, where thousands of colorful seabirds nest, and a small island where over 20,000 horned and tufted puffins make their nests every summer. Look for graceful humpback whales, Orcas, playful otters, and hear Stellar Sea lions bellow from rocky cliffs.
