Agenda
President's
Report
- Eric
attended the Alaska Chapter meeting, where he promoted the Division
and talked with the Chapter about the WD co-convening in 2005 along
with the parent society in Anchorage. He also sold 36 hats!
- He
will also participate in a conference call on November 21 regarding
the 2004 meeting with the World Fisheries Congress (WFC).
- A
new issue of the Tributary was either sent out already or is just
finishing up in the print shop.
WDAFS
Retreat, December 3-4th, Portland
- Eric
sent out a draft agenda.
- The
Division will reimburse those who cannot get reimbursed through their
employer or local chapter.
- There
will be a social on Monday night, organized by the Greater Portland
Chapter.
2002
Annual Meeting Update
- Final
call for papers will be January 15th.
- WDAFS
will host a breakfast for which we need to begin raising funds for.
It was suggested that we solicit the same three fund sources as last
year (we can reuse the banner that way, too!)
- We
will discuss the upcoming annual meeting in more detail at the upcoming
retreat.
2003
Annual Meeting
- Tom
McMahon and Dave Manning are going to San Diego at the end of December
to scope out possible locations for our socials and will stay at the
Hyatt (across from SeaWorld), which is the proposed meeting location.
Scholarships
- Deadline
to get scholarship applications to Bob Greswell is February 15th.
- There
will also be a supplemental scholarship of $600.00 sponsored by the
Sustainable Fisheries Foundation. Applications for this award
will be separate.
- Bob
will mail letter to a list of university contacts and is hoping to
advertise the scholarships in our next issue of the Tributary (January),
and Don suggested mailing out an announcement on the list server.
- There
was also a suggestion to publish thank you letters from recipients
in the Tributary.
Native
Peoples Fisheries and Equal Opportunity Committees
- Eric
asked whether we should continue to have these committees, and if
so, what is their charge? If we find reason to continue these
committees at the present time, a committee chair will need to be
appointed. If not, we can reevaluate the committees at a later
date and reinstate them as needed.
Budget/Finances
- The
WFC Program Committee (specifically Bruce Ward and Dana Schmidt) requested
$500 to support an organizational meeting/dinner. We voted not
to donate funds at this time due to low funds in our grants funding
budget and since the Sustainable Fisheries Foundation had already
agreed to donate the $500 toward the dinner.
- A
request was made from the parent society for the Western Division
to pay back costs incurred from the Breakfast Meeting. After
a lot of discussion regarding this agenda item, it was voted and approved
to submit $1,080 to the parent society to help defray costs.
This amount was decided upon since we had solicited for $1,500 in
donations to assist in the under budgeting of the breakfast, and spent
$420 on banners to promote the breakfast (leaving $1,080).
- The
parent society is giving the Western Division 6% of the Annual Meeting
proceeds from the 2001 meeting held in Phoenix. Betsy (Fritz)
is waiting for the budget to be settled before she distributes funds.
Communications
- Eric
suggested that we elevate Newsletter and Electronic Communications
appointments to committees. This would include a Chairperson
and perhaps involve subcommittees, for example the Electronic Communications
committee would have website and email subcommittees (with possibly
only one committee member).
- Eric
is going to pursue the list server issue with the parent society governing
board (discussed during October teleconference).
- The
Western Division Website needs the local chapter information to be
updated.
December
Teleconference
- No
teleconference will be conducted due to the Retreat being held December
3-4.
