Cutthroat Trout Documentary

Last updated March 7, 2008

The idea of developing a inland cutthroat trout documentary originated during the spring, 2002. The documentary was viewed as a way to present factual information on inland cutthroat trout in an informative and entertaining way. There were a number of public outreach goals linked to the documentary. Goals: 1. Develop a documentary package suitable for airing on PBS, 2. Develop a documentary in a format that would be used in school, 3. Develop a documentary that could be used to compliment public meeting presentations on cutthroat conservation, 4. Develop a package that presents factual information in an entertaining and thought provoking fashion.

Project Status

The initial administrative efforts to get the project started took more time that expected. The necessary contracts and agreements were not officially in place until August, 2002. Some filming was initiated in June, 2002 and additional filming occurred during September, October and early November, 2002. At present, we are still attempting to get a script completed. Negotiations with a script writer are complete and we anticipate having a draft script to review in a matter of weeks. Other aspects of the documentary that will be developed during the next few months include depiction of the evolutionary and zoogeographical aspects of cutthroat trout as a species and a number of subspecies. In additional, the historical perspective will also be developed. We anticipated having these parts of the documentary completed prior to the coming field season.

Financial Status

WDAFS has agreed to serve as a collection and distribution agent for the funds committed to the project. A specific account has been set up to account for the funds received by WDAFS. At present this account contains approximately $44,700. In addition $ 25,000 will be supplied by MFWP and the Forest Service as the project proceeds. An additional $ 10,000 has be pledged but not yet received. Approximately $16,000 has been dispersed to the production company (Montana State University Public Television) to this point in time.

Future Outlook

Because of the initial delays, it is expected that the project will likely run into early 2004 for final completion. We are hopeful that the production could be available for presentation at the winter and spring AFS Chapter meetings in 2004.
