Eugene Maughan was a consummate professional whose gentle nature and thoughtfulness were appreciated by all who knew him. His dedication to educating young scientists was second to none, and a number of Gene's former students are now nationally and internationally recognized professionals. Many have continued his fine tradition of teaching and training the fishery scientists of the future. Not only was Gene a rigorous scientist, he was exceptionally ethical in both his professional and private life. His compassion for others was apparent in his role of surrogate parent to numerous students. A man true to his word, Gene was dedicated to our natural resources. He was always a fun companion that enjoyed that support of a loving family.
The Western Division of the American Fisheries Society truly appreciates Gene’s contributions and dedication to the fisheries profession. In order to recognize his life’s work in perpetuity, the name of the graduate student scholarship was changed in July 2000 to honor of Gene. Since then, the Western Division’s graduate scholarship fund has been known as the Owen Eugene Maughan Graduate Student Scholarship Fund (Eugene Maughan Scholarship Fund). The fund was established to promote and provide a financial incentive for deserving graduate students in the fishery sciences.
